The modern state was formed on December 25, 1991, as a result of the collapse of the USSR. Russia is one of the five recognized nuclear powers with the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, a member of the G20, the Council of Europe, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Eurasian Economic Community, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), World Trade Organization and a leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
According to the Constitution, the Russian Federation consists of 85 entities (including the occupied Ukrainian territories: Crimea and Sevastopol), 46 of which are called regions, 22 - republics, 9 - territories, 3 - cities of federal importance, 4 - autonomous districts and 1 - autonomous region.
